Lighting of Ceremonial Candle — April 16 Memorial
The ceremonial candle will be lit by representatives of the student body and the names of the 32 Hokies lost on April 16, 2007, will be read. The Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes. The candle will remain lit for 24 hours.

Wreath Laying and Moment of Silence — April 16 Memorial

11:27 p.m.

Cadet Guard — April 16th Memorial
Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard at the April 16th Memorial for 32 minutes.

11:59 p.m.

Extinguishing of Ceremonial Candle – April 16 Memorial
Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes prior to the 11:59 p.m. extinguishing. The candle will be extinguished, and the light will be carried back into Burruss Hall, representing the commitment to never forget.

Month of April

Following the events of April 16, 2007, Virginia Tech received thousands of handmade and heartfelt items to express condolences, thoughts and prayers of healing and support, and solace for the Hokie Community. This exhibit highlights just a few of the collected items that were made by hand to share the hearts of the world with the Hokie Community.

A quilt in honor of the victims who died on April 16 is on display in Special Collections and University Archive in Newman Library.  The quilt is available for viewing each weekday through April from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Provided by the VTV Family Outreach Foundation.

Charlotte Hokies 3.2 Remembrance Walk

  • Charlotte Hokies, please plan to join us again this year as we remember the 32 students and faculty who were tragically taken from us on April 16, 2007. This event is open to all Hokies, their families, and friends — there will be plenty of parking. We will run/walk on the Light Rail path starting and ending at the Benny’s in South End. After, the chapter will provide a little taste of home with a slice of Benny’s Pizza to all participants. Please RSVP by indicating you are coming on Facebook. We hope you will join us to honor and remember.

D.C. Day of Remembrance 3.2 Mile Run/Walk 

  • Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m.–noon.  
  • We will meet on the Constitution Avenue side of the National Gallery of Art at and run/walk on the National Mall, starting and ending at the National Gallery of Art.

  • Additional Information: Washington, D.C. area Hokies will meet at the National Mall to virtually take part in Virginia Tech’s annual 3.2-mile Run in Remembrance, to remember the vibrant lives of the 32 students and faculty who were tragically taken from us in 2007. This event is rain or shine, and participants of all ages are welcome, as well as four-legged friends.  Please use the registration form to register your friends and family members that are planning to join you.

New York City 3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance 

  • Saturday, April 13 at 9:30 a.m. 
  • Central Park. We will meet at the South Gate House (address is Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, New York, NY 10128) on the east side by 86th street.
  • Registration Link: Link coming soon. 
  • New York City Hokies will meet at Central Park to take part in Virginia Tech’s annual 3.2-mile Run/Walk in Remembrance, to remember the vibrant lives of the 32 students and faculty who were tragically taken from us in 2007. This event is rain or shine, and participants of all ages are welcome, as well as four-legged friends. While there is no cost to attend, please use the registration form to register your friends and family members that are planning to join you.

Peninsula Run in Remembrance 

  • Saturday, April 13 at 9 a.m. 
  • The run starts on the Fort Monroe Sea wall next to the Paradise Ocean Club. 490 Fenwick Road, Fort Monroe, VA 23651
  • We will be having the Run in Remembrance at Fort Monroe. It is a 3.2 mile run. Anyone who wants to do the Run in Remembrance must register because we are required by Fort Monroe to send them how many will be at the event. Email Louise Schaeffler, Peninsula Chapter President, at weaze@vt.edu to register.
