2015 Day of Remembrance events

Thursday, April 16, 2015

  • Midnight: Lighting of Ceremonial Candle – April 16th Memorial
    Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes. The candle will remain lit for 24 hours.
  • 9:43 AM: Moment of Silence – Campus
    Prior to the moment of silence, President Sands and Provost McNamee will be joined by members of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad to place wreaths at the memorial in memory of the victims and in honor of the survivors of the April 16, 2007 tragedy. Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard at the April 16th Memorial to mark the moment of silence. The cadets will continue to stand guard for 32 minutes.
  • 10 AM: Echo Taps – Campus
    Echo Taps will be played by members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, Buglers of the Guard. They will be positioned at various locations through-out campus.
  • 11:30 AM: Community Picnic – Note Rain Location: Commonwealth Ballroom, Squires Student Center
  • 11:27 PM: April 16th Memorial
    Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard at the April 16th Memorial for 32 minutes.
  • 11:59 PM: Extinguishing of Ceremonial Candle - April 16th Memorial
    Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes prior to the 11:59 PM extinguishing. The candle will be extinguished and the light will be carried back into Burruss Hall, representing the commitment to never forget.

  • April 12 | 1:40 PM - 4:15 PM: Help ensure healthy, affordable food is available to residents of the New River Valley with the YMCA Community Gardens.
  • April 14 | 2:15 PM - 5:15 PM: Do you enjoy working with kids, especially toddlers through 10 year olds? Come learn and serve with the Blacksburg Children’s Museum to facilitate craft projects, theater activities and more.
  • April 15 | 11:10 AM - 4:30 PM: Help build homes for those in need with Habitat for Humanity in Roanoke, Virginia.
  • April 17 | 12:30 PM - 5 PM : Help feed southwest Virginia's hungry by sorting and preparing boxes of food that will be distributed to local food banks with Feeding America in Salem, Virginia.
  • April 17 | 2:15 PM - 4:45 PM: Ensure healthy, affordable food is available to residents of the New River Valley with the YMCA Community Gardens.
  • April 19 | 1:40 PM - 4:15 PM: Help ensure healthy, affordable food is available to residents of the New River Valley with the YMCA Community Gardens.

Reynolds Homestead 3.2 Run in Remembrance

The 3.2 Run in Remembrance is held to remember the 32 Hokies who lost their lives on April 16, 2007. The event strives to bring fellow Hokies together, to feel the support of the community, and to celebrate the lives of our friends and family members. The Reynolds Homestead course will take you through private research property that is not generally open to the public.

Kentuckiana

Kosair Charities Volunteer Project

This will be our 3rd year in a row to help do major spring cleaning, both inside and outside, for Kosair Charities (formerly Easter Seals). The inside work consists of wiping down all of the occupational and physical therapy equipment. The outside work includes power washing the playground equipment and helping to prep the therapy garden. We have invited other ACC school alumni to join us for this day of service. We hope to still have the largest alumni turnout, as there will be a prize of some sort for the school with the largest numbers. There will be a free lunch after we finish at noon. Please feel free to bring your kids with you if they are willing to work, as it's a great way for them to earn service hours for school and scouts.

Central Pennsylvania

Virtual 3.2 Run/Walk in Remembrance

The run/walk event will be held on the Jonathan Eshenour Memorial Trail in Hershey, Pennsylvania (West of the Medical Center on the corner of Bullfrog Valley Road and Woods Lane). The event is open to all members of the community, but attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite maroon and orange.

Charleston, South Carolina

Run in Remembrance: 3.2 for 32

We will meet at Marion Square at 6 PM and we will start running at 6:30 PM Marion Square is downtown, at the corner of King & Calhoun Street.

First State

Habitat for Humanity Service Event

The First State Chapter will be working with the local Habitat for Humanity organization to help in providing affordable housing for those in need. We welcome all Hokies in our area to participate, but pre-registration is required.

Fredericksburg

Meal Preparation at Thurman Brisben Center Homeless Shelter

The Fredericksburg Chapter will be providing a dinner at our local homeless shelter for the 2nd year. We are looking for volunteers to help prepare the meal from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM (three people) and to serve the meal from 5:30 PM to 7 PM (four people).

Atlanta

3.2 for 32 Remembrance Run/Walk

The Atlanta Hokies will meet at Chastain Park for our annual 3.2 for 32 Remembrance Run/Walk. We’ll be meeting in the picnic shelter area at 9 AM There will be orange and maroon balloons up to guide alumni to the meeting spot. Water and snacks will be provided, and we are encouraging everyone participating to wear LOTS of orange and maroon. We will be accepting donations for the Memorial Fund.

Please join us to remember the 32 Hokies who lost their lives on 4-16, as well as those who survived this tragic event. This event strives to bring fellow Hokies together, to feel the support of the community, and to celebrate the lives of our friends and family members. This is a family-friendly event, so bring your kids, family, friends, and dogs (must be on a leash) as we walk/run the outer loop of Green Lake Park. Afterwards, we will grab dessert/frozen yogurt at Zoe Yogurt between 7 PM and 7:30 PM (dogs must stay outside). REMINDER: Wear your orange and maroon so we can find you!

IOA Corporate 5K

A Walk to Remember 32

Every year, we gather together for a moment of silence and a friendly Hokie walk around Centennial Park to remember those that lost their lives on April 16, 2007. We will meet in front of the Parthenon on the long side that faces West End Avenue. Wear Orange & Maroon.

Annual 3.2 for 32 Remembrance Walk/Run

The Denver Hokies will be hosting our Annual 3.2 for 32 Remembrance Walk/Run on Saturday, April 18th at Wash Park; please invite/bring your family, friends, kids, and dogs (on leashes). This event will begin at 10:45 AM, with lunch being served at noon. For this year’s event, we are following a potluck format. The chapter will supply hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks, along with a hot side. Everyone is encouraged to bring a side dish, dessert, or appetizer. Group picture taken at 11 AM Bring lawn chairs and blankets for picnic lunch.
